NRL Drama: Payne Haas' Shocking Move and the Broncos' Response (2026)

The Broncos are in damage control after a stunning development that could see their star player, Payne Haas, depart the club, despite a massive contract offer. This situation has sent shockwaves through the NRL, with reports claiming the Broncos "low-balled" Haas before his unexpected signing with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. However, it now appears Brisbane will let him go without a fight.

But here's where it gets controversial... While the narrative suggests a financial dispute, Broncos chairman Karl Morris insists the decision "wasn't about the money." He's also come to the defense of coach Michael Maguire, refuting speculation that the two may have had a strained relationship. Morris stated that Haas's move was driven by a desire to "prove himself" elsewhere, suggesting a yearning for a fresh start after a significant tenure with the club.

It was widely reported that the Broncos were prepared to significantly increase their offer to Haas during a 10-day cooling-off period, a window that allows players to reconsider their decisions. This period was seen as an opportunity for Brisbane to sway Haas back. However, Nine reporter Danny Weidler revealed on Wednesday that the South Sydney Rabbitohs have seemingly sealed the deal, and Brisbane will not be launching a counter-offer.

According to an interview with CODE Sports, Morris expressed confidence in the relationship between Haas and Maguire. He elaborated that Brisbane's initial offer to Haas was substantial, potentially reaching $7.8 million over six years, and could have even surpassed $8 million with salary cap adjustments. "It wasn’t about the money. Simple as that. It depended on what he wanted. We talked about a number of options but we’re very comfortable with our position," Morris explained. He further added, "At the end of the day, an NRL career can be very short and I can understand if Payne wants to do the best thing for his family. I have never heard one issue with Payne and Madge. One hundred per cent there is no issue with Madge — I have not heard one whisper of that."

And this is the part most people miss... While Haas and his teammates were preparing for their journey to England for the World Club Challenge, the timing of his decision came as a surprise to Morris. "The feedback was that Payne was looking for a change. When anyone has been doing any job for a long period of time, people always wonder is the grass greener somewhere else," Morris commented. He admitted, "Of course I was shocked, particularly at the timing, the day before they were leaving for the UK. But with these sorts of things, when is it good timing? He simply wanted a fresh start and I think it’s the same case for Payne. We wish him good luck."

What do you think? Is it truly about a fresh start, or is there more to the story behind Haas's departure? Could the Broncos have done more to keep their star player? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
